Smoking Vehicle
Way back during Clean Air Week 1992, the District
initiated its smoking vehicle program. Since then, we have
received over 20,000 calls. And what’s so hot about that?
For one thing, it gets residents involved in our air
pollution program by making the connection between motor
vehicles and bad air. People call the hotline and report the
license plate number of the smoking vehicle and the time,
date, and location where the vehicle was observed. After the
call is verified, the District sends the registered owner a
letter requesting the vehicle be repaired. Over 20 percent
of those contacted tell us they have repaired the problem.
No fees. No penalties. Just a reminder for us all to be
environmentally conscious with our vehicles.
