Burn days are a reality of life in an agricultural community like Ventura County. As authorized by state legislation, VCAPCD must allow, but may regulate, agricultural burn days.
In our effort to regulate agricultural burning and protect public health, our Monitoring Division staff members take air quality conditions into account to try to pick days and time periods that will maximize smoke dispersion. The district also restricts the amount of agricultural material that can be burned.
Prior to designating a burn day and time period, we coordinate our efforts with the Ventura County Fire Department (VCFD) and the California Air Resources Board. We update the Agricultural Burn Status for all six areas of the county at 4 p.m. daily. The burn status and a map of the county’s six burn regions is on the Air Quality Forecast & Agricultural Burn Status page. Agricultural burning is not permitted on weekends or holidays.
Each VCFD station issues the agricultural burn permits for its area. VCFD personnel check the burn piles for fire safety and serve as the VCAPCD’s liaison for compliance to the district's Rule 56, Open Burning. Agricultural burning can only be performed by agricultural operations.
